Recipe for Dal Fry



"Dal" is a Hindi word used for "Lentils". And this recipe has got 5 different lentils in it. So it is called "Dal Fry". It is an Indian traditional Dish. We mostly prefer to have it with Indian Bread or Rice.

Ingredients for Dal Fry

  • 1/2 cup Tuvar dal
  • 1/2 cup Masoor dal
  • 1/2 cup Moong dal
  • 1/2 cup Chana dal
  • 1/4 cup Udad dal
  • 1/2 cup Onion, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 5 Garlic cloves, chopped
  • 2 Red chilli, dry
  • 1/2 tsp chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • salt, to taste
  • 1/4 tsp Garam Masala
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1 cup Tomato, paste

    Instructions for making Dal Fry


    1. Wash all the dals (lentils) and boil all of them together in a deep pan (or pressure cooker). Don't beat it after boiling.
    2. Put a pan on stove. Add Oil to it. Then add cumin seeds, dry red chilli , garlic, and onion to it. Fry it for 3-4 minutes
    3. Now add tomato paste , Chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt and garam masala to it.
    4. Lastly add the boiled lentils (dals). Add some butter to it. Serve it and enjoy it with Indian Bread (Chapati) or Rice
